How the estimate is built
We start from the net area of the project — the leather that actually ends up in the finished piece — then multiply by a waste factor for offcuts, hide defects and beginner mistakes, and finally by your quantity. The total is rounded up to the next half square foot because leather is sold in whole pieces, not to the inch.
Belts are handled by length instead of area: the strap must be one uninterrupted run of waist + 10 in, which is why a long belt can need a bend or a full side even though its area is small.

How much leather do I need for a bifold wallet?
A bifold uses about 1.3 sq ft of net area. With a beginner waste allowance you should buy around 1.7–2 sq ft so you have room for mistakes and can cut around blemishes.
How long should a leather belt strap be?
Cut the strap to your waist measurement plus about 10 inches to allow for the buckle fold and billet holes. A 34 in waist needs roughly a 44 in strap.
Why add a waste factor?
Hides have scars, brands and thin bellies you cannot use, and beginners mis-cut. A 30% allowance keeps one spoiled panel from stopping your project.
What does “side” or “shoulder” mean?
They are cuts of a cow hide. A side is half a hide (18–24 sq ft); a single shoulder is a smaller 4–7 sq ft piece that is the usual first buy.
