Belt Size & Strap Length Calculator
Exact belt size, blank length and hole layout for a leather belt that fits.
Quick answer
To size a leather belt, take your jeans size and add about 2 inches for the finished belt size (the buckle-pin-to-fit-hole length). Cut the strap blank roughly 10–12 inches longer than your waist to allow for the buckle fold and 5–7 adjustment holes spaced 1 inch apart, with the fit hole in the middle. Enter your size below for exact numbers.

How belt sizing works
A belt’s size is the distance from the buckle’s pin to the middle hole — not the length of the whole strap. Because the strap also has to wrap behind the buckle and carry a row of holes plus a tip, the blank you cut is much longer: about waist + 10 to 12 in. Put the fit hole in the centre of the row so you have equal room to tighten or loosen as layers and seasons change.
Belt blanks & buckles
Pre-cut blanks skip the strap cutter; match buckle width to your 1.5 in strap.

Frequently asked questions
What size belt should I buy for a 34 waist?
For a 34 in jeans size, a 36 in belt is the usual pick — about two inches larger than your pant size so the middle hole lands at your natural wear point.
How long should a leather belt blank be?
Cut the blank about 10–12 inches longer than your waist: roughly 3 in wraps behind the buckle, and the billet needs room for 5–7 holes plus a tip.
How far apart should belt holes be?
One inch is the classic spacing; 3/4 inch gives a dressier, finer adjustment. Put the fit hole in the middle so you can go up or down.
What width buckle do I need?
The buckle must match the strap width exactly. A 1.5 in strap needs a 1.5 in buckle; mixing sizes leaves the belt loose in the buckle.
